Yoga Nidra

...is a guided technique to help you achieve a deep state of relaxation while you remain awake. What results is the arrival at a higher state of consciousness, optimal for healing, learning and spiritual growth and transformation.

How is this accomplished?
The Yoga Nidra teacher uses systematic techniques of guiding your awareness. You do nothing but relax on a yoga mat, maybe nestle into a blanket, and listen.

What's it like?
It's unique for each individual and unique from session to session. This state might be reflected internally as one that is flowing in the sea of life, of awareness, which is both healing and enlightening.

At the physical level the brain itself will come to a slower rate of vibration, towards the Alpha brain state, and possibly even the Theta state.  Theta is equated with a meditative state of consciousness. Body consciousness eventually is lulled to a comforting sleep while higher mental faculties remain awake.

It's a time to counteract our busy lifestyles, slow time down, stop doing, and just be.

How can it help me?
Through deep relaxation and the rotation of consciousness involved in Yoga Nidra, we can help optimize body and mind. The overall purpose of the practice, however, is for spiritual transformation.

In body - Research shows that 30 minutes of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 4 hours of deep sleep, giving the body nourishment and a thorough opportunity to rest and heal.

In soul - Yoga Nidra is steeped in spiritual and meditative elements based on Tantric techniques that facilitate more than just relaxation—it seeks to explore the nature of consciousness itself,  potentially leading to spiritual awakening.

What do I do?
Once you lie down, there's nothing for you to do. You'll be guided into a higher state of consciousness through Yoga Nidra techniques. Because you'll have effortlessly achieved deep relaxation through verbal instruction, you'll easily delve into creative visualization as part of our exploration of consciousness. In that state, sound healing instruments including crystal singing bowls, a gong, and other harmonic sounds, will help you maintain a yogic sleep.  Body, mind and soul will rest in the receptive and nonjudgmental mode of Being.  The typical experience is beyond words.  Sandy will specially prepare a nourishing herbal tea blend which we'll share to close our time together.

Turn the video's volume up to hear these crystal singing bowls, rain stick, and fairy chimes, which are just a few of the sounds you will hear in this journey.

What to bring

It's important to bring items for lying down on a firm floor for an extended period. Something to put UNDER you, something to put OVER you.

Suggestions

  • Under you - One or even two yoga mats, a yoga mat and a blanket to put on top of it or a sleeping bag, maybe a pillow

  • Over you - a light blanket(s) or sleeping bag

  • Other accessories - hydration, pillow, eye pillow/mask (for relaxation or blocking out low light) etc. It is suggested to help you stay awake not to use eye pillows/masks, but if it helps to block the light, bring an eye pillow/mask

What to avoid

Wearing any perfume or cologne. They are particularly distracting to Sandy who's overly sensitive to them and will be for the rest of the group as we'll be consciously working with the senses.

Yoga Nidra

+ Full Sound Immersion & Intentional Herbal Infusion
with Sandy Naimou

YOGA NIDRA is a deep relaxed yet wakeful state, a "yogic sleep," in which we experience a higher state of consciousness, that state of being the "silent observer," the "quiet watcher," the "witness."  We are able to achieve this by supportive techniques.  In this offering, we go through a process involving gentle movement, guided meditation & sound immersion. Those who fall asleep still receive all the benefits! Yes, it's that good!

Yoga Nidra involves lying down and being aware; aware of the sensations, thoughts and feelings that you are experiencing.  Imagine being in a deep sleep state but you are conscious.  Some liken it to lucid dreaming, others describe it as the stage between being awake and falling asleep.  Yoga Nidra is a yogic sleep, a deep state of pure relaxation where we have consciously engaged the relaxation response and go as deep as we can to experience the Silent Witness that exists in each of us.  Your brain waves come into the theta state, often described as a magical state of consciousness that is difficult to maintain.  Yoga Nidra employs techniques to help you get there and maintain it.

Now, imagine the end of a typical one hour yoga class where we rest lying down for a few minutes in "corpse pose" or savasana (shavasana). Multiply that feeling by ten!  It's powerful! The relaxation response is triggered with deep breathing, meditation, visualization, and sound. We'll be experiencing all of these.

Once you're lying down, snuggled up, and go through the process of Yoga Nidra, Sandy will play sound healing instruments. Absorbing the sounds will help recalibrate body and mind while opening up to clarity in the heart and your higher mind, where Intuition can be brought down from the Soul.

The Format of the evening

PREPARATION. You'll be lying down on a floor for an hour, so you'll need to prepare. Commonly, people have brought a yoga mat, a blanket and a pillow, sometimes a sleeping pad. Yoga bolsters are nice for under the knees if you have one. There will be some yoga blankets available. Also helpful, an eye mask or light kerchief to cover your eyes for darkness. And anything else your heart desires for comfort. A water bottle is a good idea.

RELEASING PHYSICAL TENSION with gentle movement, muscle activation and release. Releasing the layer of physical tension will allow for less physical distraction and a stronger relaxation response. We move so that you can rest lying down for a good hour!

RELEASING MENTAL TENSION, we move into GROUP CHANTING to help calm and center the mind, while syncing up as a group through the power of sound. Self-generated sound healing is a powerful way to begin, to release, to feel, to heal, and to sink deeper into what this experience has to offer you.

YOGA NIDRA & SOUND IMMERSION. From here, you'll find your way to lying down comfortably. Open your mind, close your eyes, and listen. You'll be guided through the Yoga Nidra techniques so that you can become aware of that aspect of you that is awareness. From here, the sound immersion begins. Through the process, you may come upon vital Self knowledge and understanding.

HERBAL INFUSION SHARING

We will share an intentional herbal infusion to close the session with an Ayurvedic herbal blend that Sandy will prepare.

INNER CLARITY

The purpose of this experience is to help clear the layers of tension in your physical body, your emotions, and your thoughts, all clouding up your inner vision. When we achieve inner clarity, whisking away the clouds and experiencing a clear mind, we can more easily access our intuitive higher minds. With a clear mind and heart, radiance shines into our lives.

You'll feel different, changed, and much more like yourself!

We hope you'll join us!

Namaste!

Sandy Naimou

Sandy has been teaching Yoga since 2011 and practicing since 1997 at the age of 17.  While her practice has changed over the years, some things have remained constant, such as her dedication to and faith in the practice, and her love for sound as a way to experiencing an inner silence and connectedness.

A little more about Sandy...

Sandy has always loved to infuse sound into the yoga classes to facilitate presence and deeper relaxation. She has offered numerous sound meditations since 2018 in classes, workshops and retreats, combining the power of sound with techniques of Yoga Nidra, even when teaching for HAP's corporate clients or for many years, GM.

Her reverence for sound has also inspired Sandy to lean on her voice for vocal toning (holding out the voice in open sounds) as well as Sanskrit mantra chanting since she began Yoga (and she's a stickler for pronunciation). These last few years in particular, she has focused on making peace with her voice, something she had long felt self-conscious about. She uses her voice to prepare for meditation, to experience a profound sense of devotion, or to simply calm her mind. Having experienced the positive effects that self-generated vocalization can have, she is always excited to bring that experience to others.

Sandy is also a professional audiobook narrator, which offers her a way to express her deep respect for power of speech in sound and tone and the art of acting. (Visit her narration website: www.sandynaimou.com or see a list of her current audiobooks on Audible)

After a hiatus on in-person indoor sessions, she's super excited to bring back in-person Yoga Nidra and sound immersions.
